A Michigan native who moved to Arizona in 1959, Swarthout wrote more than 20 novels and many short stories, plays and film scripts. Swarthout's novel, "The Melodeon" was adapted by Stewart Stern for "A Christmas to Remember" (1978), a sentimental TV movie set during the Depression starring Jason Robards, Eva Marie Saint and Joanne Woodward.
